Fine Art Collection

University of Tasmania’s Fine Art Collection at Hobart holds around 1800 works of contemporary and historic art. The works are in a wide range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking and digital imaging. Acquisitions have been made since 1967 through a variety of funding sources, including State and Commonwealth Funding, University Funding, the Cultural Gifts program and individual bequests and donations. The whole collection was recently estimated to be worth over $5 million.

The Collection is a rich educational and cultural resource for the Hobart Community, and the students and staff at the University of Tasmania. Permanent displays can be viewed in the buildings and grounds of all University campuses in Hobart.

The Tasmanian School of Art displays works from the Fine Art Collection by such artists as Robert Rooney, Fiona Hall, Aleks Danko, Margaret Dodd, Tony Bishop and Olive Bishop. Over the years resident artists have donated works, some of which remain in the Centre for the Arts. For example, Neil Haddon's Foil No. 2a is displayed in the boardroom and Andrew Spiers Measuring Device is in the Centre’s apartment for visiting artists.

Other works by past Tasmanian School of Art resident artists are displayed elsewhere in the University. For example John Wolseley’s works hang in the School of Geography and Environmental Studies and John Neeson’s Tasmanian Drawing has a prominent spot in the University Council Room.

The collection also includes works by other fine Tasmanian and overseas artists who studied at the Tasmanian School of Art. These include Anne Morrison, David Keeling, Alex Wanders and Philip Wolfhagen. Past and present staff such as Raymond Arnold, Les Blakebrough, Pat Brassington, Wayne Brookes, Ron Brooks, Lindsay Broughton, Tim Burns, Rod Ewins, Anton Holzner, Bob Jenyns, Lorraine Jenyns, Sara Lindsay, Anne Macdonald, Milan Milojevic, Mary Scott, Geoff Parr, David Stephenson, John Smith, Penny Smith and Paul Zika are all represented in the collection.

The Collection also includes portraits of prominent University personnel. Lucien Dechaineaux, after whom the lecture Theatre at the Tasmanian School of Art is named, is the subject of a portrait by the Hobart artist Jack Carington Smith. There is also a self portrait by Jack Carington Smith, who took over from Dechaineaux as head of School, and after whom the Library is named. The Collection also holds work by Rosamond McCulloch, whose Bequest enabled the Tasmanian School of Art to acquire a studio at the Cite Paris.

Works from the collection are sometimes chosen to feature in exhibitions in the Plimsoll Gallery. Bill Henson’s Untitled 1994/95: cat no. 5 Venice Biennale 1995 and Paul Boam’s Blues on Bach were included in recent shows. The Gallery also featured works, by Christopher Le Brun Eduardo Paolozzi, Victor Pasmore, John Piper and Joe Tilson, which were part of a recent donation from Dr. Douglas Kagi. This generous donation of fifty twentieth century European prints came to the University through the Cultural Gifts Program.

Many of the Fine Art Collection works are hung in the foyers, theatres and corridors of the University of Tasmania where they enhance and stimulate the interior environment for students and are easily accessed by the public. It is advisable to check the location of particular works to ensure that they are available for inspection.
